Urban Meyer Resigns as Head Coach at Florida
Update December 27th: Urban Meyer now says he will only be sitting out one year and then returning as head coach. So Urban is withdrawing his resignation? This just gets weirder and weirder by the moment. Apparently Urban Meyer's team had a "spirited practice" which has made Urban change his mind about resigning, so now he is just taking a "leave of absence".
Urban Meyer resigns from the head coaching position at the University of Florida due to non life threatening heart conditions! According to ESPN, Meyer has been stressed out the past four years in Gainsville and his health has suffered. Meyer has led the Florida Gators to two National Championships in the past three years and led the Gator football team to an undefeated season before falling to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. He was also named the National Coach of the Year in 2004 and has become one of the most heralded coaches in the nation. Out of all the colleges and trade schools in Florida, the Florida Gators are considered by many to be one of the best collegiate teams in the state. Urban Meyer Stepping Down
Why would Urban Meyer step down right before their Bowl Game? How will his resignation affect the team? The Gators are already disappointed after their Conference Championship loss, so why would Urban break news like this with the game just a few days away? It doesn't make any sense to me... unless there is more going on behind the scenes. Hopefully his health issues aren't more severe than he's letting on. We wish Urban the best. He is a fantastic coach.
What Does Urban Meyer's Resignation Mean?
He says he will stay on board with the Florida program but it is unclear what his position with the team will be. Who will be the next new Florida football coach?
That remains to be seen. I'm sure the administration is frantically trying to figure that out as you read this.
What's next for Urban Meyer?
That's a good question, Florida fans are clinging to the idea that hopefully he will recover from his health problems and return as the head coach again next season. but that doesn't appear likely. Some rumors have sprang up around the internet saying perhaps this is a ploy by Meyer to eventually take another head coaching job, perhaps the Notre Dame head coaching job. But those are just rumors and speculation at this point.
Meyer and Tim Tebow will have to really pull it together to keep this distraction from hurting their team. However, their opponent is very much in the same boat, so it pretty much evens out. Update January 28th, 2009: There is going to be an Urban Meyer press conference today in which Urban will address all the issues surrounding his sudden announcement to step down as Florida's coach and also to address the severity of his health conditions including his defective heart muscle.
